Tanzania Safari Travel Checklist

What to pack (and what to leave at home) for your safari in Tanzania.

Why packing smart matters on a Tanzania Safari

Planning a safari in Tanzania is exciting — and packing well makes all the difference.
This travel checklist helps you prepare for game drives, bush flights and lodge stays, so you can travel light, stay comfortable and fully enjoy your safari experience in Tanzania’s Northern Circuit.

Whether you’re visiting Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Lake Manyara, this guide covers everything you need to bring — and what you should avoid

Comfort on game drives

Smooth transfer

Respect local regulations

❌ Plastic bags are banned in Tanzania

Plastic carrier bags, plastic shopping bags and plastic zip-lock bags are illegal in Tanzania. These may be confiscated at the airport and can result in fines.

⚠️ Luggage advice

Soft-sided luggage is strongly recommended.
Hard-shell suitcases are not advised, as they take up more space and do not fit well in safari vehicles.

Luggage

  • Soft-sided suitcase or duffel bag
  • Daypack for game drives & excursions
  • Packing cubes / compression bags
  • Small padlock

Tip: Soft-sided luggage is recommended for safari vehicles and bush flights.

Toiletries & Personal Care

  • Sunscreen (high SPF) + lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent (DEET recommended)
  • Shampoo / shower gel (travel size)
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Contact lenses / glasses + accessories

Note: For sustainability reasons, the use of hair dryers is not permitted. Safari lodges mainly rely on solar energy, and high-power devices can overload the system.

Health & First Aid

  • Personal medication (in hand luggage)
  • Malaria prophylaxis (if prescribed)
  • Painkillers
  • Plasters + blister pads
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Electrolytes / ORS
  • Anti-itch cream for bites

Electronics

  • Phone + charger
  • Camera + extra memory cards
  • Power bank
  • Universal travel adapter
  • Binoculars (highly recommended)

Documents & Money

  • Passport (valid at least 6 months)
  • Visa (or confirmation)
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Vaccination booklet (if applicable)
  • Flight tickets
  • Cash (USD/TZS) + card
  • Copies of important documents

Useful Extras

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Flashlight / headlamp
  • Sunglasses
  • Scarf / buff (dust)
  • Laundry bag
  • Notebook / travel journal

e-SIM for Tanzania (Mobile Internet)

We strongly recommend using an e-SIM for mobile data while travelling in Tanzania. It allows you to stay connected without buying a local SIM card and helps avoid high roaming costs.

  • Navigation & maps
  • Staying in touch with family
  • Sharing safari moments
  • Emergency communication

Important: Make sure your phone supports e-SIM and install it before arrival.
