And honestly, it is a very fair question.
A safari in Tanzania is a dream for many people, but it is also a serious investment. From the outside, it can sometimes feel difficult to understand what you are really paying for. Why does one safari cost much more than another? Why can the same route be thousands of dollars different depending on the lodge, the season or the number of guests?

Why Does a Safari Cost More Than a Regular Holiday?

This is one of the questions travellers often ask when they start planning a safari. And I understand it very well.
A safari is very different from a regular holiday. You are not only booking a hotel and transport from one place to another. A safari is built around protected wildlife areas, conservation, remote lodges, professional guiding, park regulations and low-impact travel.
In Tanzania, many of the most beautiful places are protected areas. Think about the endless plains of the Serengeti, the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, the elephant landscapes of Tarangire and the forests and lake views of Lake Manyara.
These areas need protection. They need rangers, conservation work, controlled access and proper management. That is one of the reasons why official park fees and conservation fees are an important part of every safari price.

Other times of year can offer better value. The green season can be beautiful, with fresh landscapes, dramatic skies, fewer vehicles and excellent wildlife viewing.

Some safari areas are naturally more expensive than others. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are world-famous, and for good reason. They offer incredible wildlife experiences, but also come with higher park fees, longer distances and more expensive lodge options.
How you travel matters
A private safari with luxury camps inside the Serengeti will cost more than a lodge-based safari using comfortable accommodation outside the parks.

Why a Short Safari Can Feel Expensive Per Day
Many travellers expect a short safari to be much cheaper.
In total, it usually is. But per day, a short safari can sometimes feel expensive.
A 3-day safari still needs a private vehicle, guide, fuel, park fees, accommodation, meals and planning. These fixed costs are spread over fewer days.
A 7-day, 8-day or 9-day safari often gives better value per day because the route can be planned more smoothly and the fixed costs are spread over more time.
This is why I always recommend looking not only at the total price, but also at the value of the experience.

The same route can feel very different depending on how you travel and where you stay.
Comfortable private safari
Ideal if you want a good private safari experience without choosing the most expensive lodges. You stay in reliable lodges or tented camps and follow a well-planned route.
Mid-range luxury private safari
A strong balance between comfort, location and price. For many travellers, this is the best value option.
Luxury private safari
Higher-end lodges or camps, often in excellent locations. Luxury is not only about the room, but also about peace, service and being close to nature.
High-end safari

How to Keep Your Safari Budget Realistic
There are smart ways to keep your Tanzania safari cost under control without losing the quality of the experience.
Travel with more people
If you travel with three or four people, the private vehicle and guide costs are shared. This can reduce the price per person.
